Brain 1996, 119:1737-1750 Reflex hyperexcitability was found in only a few hemiparetic individuals but hypertonia associated with muscle contracture was observed in one-half of the individuals studied. Based on these findings, the authors questioned the nature of the relationship between spasticity and muscle contracture. In addition, the study found no relationship between spasticity and either weakness or loss of dexterity.
