While the substrate typically used in this assay, thianthrene 5-oxide, is convenient in that it contains both a sulfoxide and a sulfide in the same molecule, simpler sulfides and sulfoxides are suitable probes as well. In some cases monofunctional substrates have been reported to be preferable since they avoid the electron-transfer side reactions that can intervene with the heterocyclic thianthrene oxide.
