    • For p > 6 the intensities of the doubly protonated ions were very much higher than those of the singly protonated species. However, the intensity of the singly protonated ion became dominant for p < 6 and the doubly protonated species disappeared for p < 4. With electrospray, multiply protonated ions which are known to be present in the solution may not be observed in the gas phase when the sites of protonation are quite close to each other. The proton loss occurs in the transition from solution to gas phase as the ion is desolvated.
