UNEP has commissioned RIVM to perform a global, model-based assessment of the environmental consequences of projected socioeconomic developments as a contribution to the planned Global Environmental Outlook that will be published in late 1996 to support the comprehensive 1997 review of the achievements towards implementing Agenda 21, 5 years post-Rio. This 'viewpoint' offers some of the preliminary results of this study, but the views expressed are those of the author only. The environmental implications of the assumed socio-economic developments have been analysed with a set of models available at RIVM, primarily the IMAGE-model for climate and land use, J Alcamo (ed) IMAGE 2.0: Integrated Modelling of Global Climate Change, Kluwer Academic, 1994
