    • a5 (SiOSi) absorption of the native oxide shows a complex band shape due to TO-LO mode splitting (see Ref. [16]), which additionally changes upon monolayer adsorption and is therefore never completely ratioed out by a clean reference. This makes an analysis of this spectral region unrewardingly complicated.

    • In a separate study, which will be published shortly, we have investigated the influence of the hydrocarbon chain length and of the terminal substituents of the primer monolayer on the structure of alkylsiloxane overlayers. For OH-terminated monolayers, this influence is small, in agreement with the present study. However, COOH-terminated monolayers, for example, show a pronounced effect of their hydrocarbon chain lengths on the resulting overlayer film structures.
