Added note: since the time that the work reported herein was completed, other reports have appeared concerning the stability of alkyl thiol encapsulated gold clusters. Brust et al (Brust M, Walker M, Bethell D, Schiffrin D J and Whyman R 1994 J. Chem. Soc. Chem. Comm. 801 Ohara et al (Ohara P C, Leff D V, Heath J R and Gelbart W M 1995 Phys. Rev. Lett. 75 3466 have synthesized alkyl thiol encapsulated gold clusters by a solution-phase method. These authors observe the same behavior reported above, i.e. that these particles are stable against physical transformations and behave as if they are macromolecular entities
