    • Coordinates were obtained from the files of the Brookhaven Protein Data Bank. The file codes for the enzymes are pdb2lym.ent for native lysozyme (9,10), pdb8lyz.ent for inactive lysozyme (11), pdb1sec.ent for native subtilisin (12, 13) and pdb2sbc.ent for the inhibited subtilisin (14). All the coordinates of the hydrogen atoms were obtained using standard geometries. The position of the oxygen atom (Oxt) which is at the C-terminal of inactive lysozyme (not included in the data set) was determined in the same way.
