I am grateful to the Russian philosopher Felix Mikhailov for pointing this out. Aspects of the Soviet empire such as these are fascinating for Canadians (like myself), coming from a society much preoccupied with questions of language

Farewell to the left
-
Winter
-
Tamás, for all his venom against Rorty, is something of an intellectual bedfellow insofar as he subscribes to a liberal politics whose primary value is personal liberty. Tamás describes his political trajectory as traveling from a kind of anarchist leftism to what he calls a "modern" or "liberal" conservative position characterized by a "libertarian refusal of state interference." "Farewell to the Left," East European Politics and Societies 5 (Winter 1991): 104-5.

London: Verso. The self-styled "neo-Whig" did not, however, dismiss such policies altogether
-
For example, in conversation Tamás dismissed concerns about whether Hungary's Liberal Opposition would provide health insurance or unemployment benefits with an airy reference to the need to introduce a market economy first (shades of the "stagism" of classical Marxism; see E. Laclau and C. Mouffe, Hegemony and Socialist Strategy [London: Verso, 1985]). The self-styled "neo-Whig" did not, however, dismiss such policies altogether.

The development of the national idea

The homogenization of cultures as a result of imperialism - itself justified by some appeal to national interest - was presciently anticipated in 1917 by Renner; see Karl Renner, "The Development of the National Idea," in Austro-Marxism, 124-25.
