    • note
    • Lexical correlations could be tested for only 19 children because for the remainder we lacked individual databases or found no overregularizations in our samples.

    • The acquisition of inflection in children and multilayered connectionist networks
    • The model of Plunkett and Marchman (note 1) displays a similar, abrupt external change, in which the onset of overregularization coincides with a sudden shift in training regime from a slow pace that allows the network to learn each irregular verb individually to a rapid pace that forces the network to generalize. • note
    • Using novel sampling techniques from biostatistics, my colleagues and I (Marcus et al., note 5, chap. V) have shown that this finding is not an artifact of a cumulative vocabulary measure that necessarily decelerates over time.

    • note
    • The only systematic study of how input frequency affects network generalization is a series of simulations conducted by Plunkett and Marchman (note 1). In this study, when the initial proportion of regular vocabulary was less than 50%, their simulation failed to generalize the regular pattern to "novel indeterminate stems" (i.e., novel words).
