1. Magnetic Recording, Vol. II: Computer Storage by C. Denis Mee and Eric D. Daniels (McGraw-Hill, New York, 1988) provides a good overview of hard disk operation and design, including both peak and partial-response, maximum-likelihood (PRML) data detection.
2. Two books that provide good general background information are Digital Signal Processing by Alan V. Oppenheim and Ronald W. Schafer (Prentice Hall, Englewood Cliffs, N.J., 1975) and Introduction to Digital Signal Processing: Principles, Algorithms and Applications, 2nd edition, by John G. Proakis and Dimitris G. Manolakis (Macmillan, New York, 1992]. The fifth chapter in the Proakis/Manolakis book in particular supplies a good analysis of discrete-time systems in the frequency domain.
