The rhizomes of the jalap bindweed, Ipomoea purga (Wender) Hayne with purgative properties were introduced in Europe about 1565, and since then they have represented one of the crude drugs with cathartic and purgative action of major trade between the New and the Old World. The dried tubercules yield a nearly tasteless purgative resin with a slight smoky odour, often given to children as an anthelminthic on account of the small dose required. It is reputed to be an excellent purge used in constipation, pain and colic in the bowels and general intestinal topor, being combined, in compound powder, with other laxatives, and with carminatives such as ginger and cloves. This drug derives its local name from the City of Xalap in the state of Veracruz in Mexico, where it is abundant. The traditional production system of the root of jalap has been recently reviewed by Linajes A.; Rico-Gray, V.; Carrion, G. Economic Bot. 1994, 48, 84-89.

The dry root of Ipomoea orizabensis (Pelletan) Steud. ex Ledanois (Ipomoea tyrianthina Lindley), known as "jalapa de Orizaba", has been exported as a substitute or adulterant of the true jalap. The first individual constituents isolated from a crude resin glycosides mixture were the orizabins I-IV. For the isolation and structure elucidation of these macrocyclic glycolipids, see Noda. N.; Ono, M.; Miyahara, K.; Kawasaki, T.; Okabe, M. Tetrahedron 1987, 43, 3889-3902.

From the active ingredient known as scammony resin, eight glycosides have been isolated and named as scammonins I-VIII, see Noda, N.; Kogetsu, H.; Kawasaki, T.; Miyahara, K.
