41. Ozaki K, Lee RT, Lee YC, Kawasaki T: The differences in structural specificity for recognition and binding between asialoglycoprotein receptors of liver and macrophages. Glycoconjugate J 1995, 12:268-274. A series of previously known multiantennary glycopeptides and synthetic Gal/GalNAc clusters have been evaluated for their relative inhibitory properties against the appropriate liver and macrophage receptors. The results suggested that the spacial arrangements of sugar binding sites and the subunit organization of macrophages and hepatic lectins are different.

A precise geometry for the intramolecular distances between the distal galactosides was shown to be essential for maximum interactions.

Polyacrylamides bearing pendant α-sialoside groups strongly inhibit agglutination of erythrocytes by influenza virus: The strong inhibition reflects enhanced binding through cooperative polyvalent interactions
-
62. Sigal GB, Mammen M, Dahmann G, Whitesides GM: Polyacrylamides bearing pendant α-sialoside groups strongly inhibit agglutination of erythrocytes by influenza virus: the strong inhibition reflects enhanced binding through cooperative polyvalent interactions. J Am Chem Soc 1996, 118:3789-3800. This recent paper contains the most comprehensive description of structure - activity relationships for series of polymeric sialosides. The inhibitory properties of these high molecular weight conjugates illustrate once more the value of cooperative polyvalent interactions in the design of potent inhibitors. Moreover, the polymers are also suspected to sterically block access to the viral receptors.
