ADAM, a widely distributed and developmentally regulated gene family encoding membrane proteins with a disintegrin and metalloprotease domain
-
Wolfsberg TG, Straight PD, Gerena RL, Huovila A-PJ, Primakoff P, Myles DG, White JM: ADAM, a widely distributed and developmentally regulated gene family encoding membrane proteins with a disintegrin and metalloprotease domain. Dev Biol 1995, 169:378-383. This paper reports the cloning, sequencing, and characterization both of genes encoding mouse fertilin-α and -β, and of several sequence-similar cDNAs from guinea pig and mouse testis. The novel gene family was named ADAM. Sequence database searches revealed additional ADAMs from a variety of mammalian tissues. In situ hybridization and PCR analysis showed that ADAMs are widely expressed in a variety of tissues and that they are developmentally regulated.

Mouse sperm-egg plasma membrane interactions analysis of roles of egg integrins and the mouse sperm homologue of PH-30 (fertilin) beta

In this paper, peptide analogs of the fertilin-β disintegrin loop were demonstrated to inhibit sperm-egg binding and fusion, corroborating other similar results [16**, 19]. A metalloprotease-disintegrin participating in myoblast fusion
-
Yagami-Hiromasa T, Sato T, Kurisaki T, Kamijo K, Nabeshima Y, Fujisawasehara A: A metalloprotease-disintegrin participating in myoblast fusion. Nature 1995, 377:652-656. This paper reports identification of three fertilin homologs, meltrins α, β, and γ, in myogenic cells, and further characterizes meltrin-α as expressed in C2 myocytes. Meltrin-α was shown to be critically involved in myotube formation, but whether it is directly involved in plasma membrane fusion per se, or has another function in myotube formation, remains to be investigated. As this fertilin-related protein is involved in myogenesis, the authors suggest that there may exist common mechanisms for sperm-egg and myoblast fusion.

Towards a molecular mechanism for gamete adhesion and fusion during mammalian fertilization
-
Wassarman P: Towards a molecular mechanism for gamete adhesion and fusion during mammalian fertilization. Curr Opin Cell Biol 1995, 7:658-664. This review discusses sperm-egg interactions during fertilization, both at the zona pellucida and at the plasma membrane. It is proposed that in mammalian fertilization, adhesion at the zona pellucida is based on carbohydrate interactions, and that plasma membrane adhesion and fusion are integrin-mediated.
