    • As will be discussed later, the polymer backbone is oriented predominantly parallel to the surface of the film (see also ref. 10). In the UV absorption experiments carried out, with light propagating along the film normal, the electric vector is parallel to the plane of the film and, thus, maximum absorption is observed from the σ-σ* transition (along the polymer backbone). Consequently, the changes observed (e.g., in Fig. 1) as the film thickness is decreased are due to the disordering of the polymer (as discussed later) and cannot be attributed to a changing orientation (e.g., perpendicular) of the backbone in the ultrathin films.
