    • This conceptual view of a biomaterial interface can be extended to materials supporting a thick biofilm or conditioning layer. In these cases, interfacial chemistry is specific to functional groups at the outermost surface layer of the biofilm and hydrophobic forces emanating from the bulk biofilm and possibly, supporting substratum.
