The acute form represents cases of Hamman-Rich syndrome, with a duration of approximately 6 months. The authors demonstrate the expression of platelet-derived growth factor and its receptor protein (and transcripts) in the acute but not in the chronic form of UIP. Surprisingly, insulin-like growth factor protein but not mRNA is expressed in the acute form of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Interleukin-8 may participate in the neutrophil accumulation that occurs in the active stages of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Like most studies involving patient samples of UIP, this study is limited to its descriptive nature.
