EMBO J 1995, 14:5467-5475. A new tool for monitoring changes in intracellular calcium has been developed. This paper shows how this tool can be adapted to estimate the concentration of calcium inside the lumen of the ER, a measurement that has been very difficult to obtain up until now.

Imaging elementary events of calcium release in skeletal muscle
-
20. Tsugorka A, Rios E, Blatter LA: Imaging elementary events of calcium release in skeletal muscle. Science 1995, 269:1723-1726. Using the confocal microscope, highly localized elevations in cytosolic calcium can be detected. These events are called sparks and they may be the opening of single channels, but more probably represent the opening of groupings of channels. Regardless of the number of channels activated for each spark, new in situ information about the intracellular calcium channels can be expected from further studies on sparks. See also [21•,22•].

J Biol Chem 1995, 270:14700-14704. Although it has been known for some time that there are multiple isoforms of the intracellular calcium-release channels, this is the first report suggesting that the isoforms can combine to form heteromultimers. The regulatory possiblities of combining different isoforms are potentially complex.
