of outstanding interest. The authors describe the identification of a blood pressure regulatory role of hemoglobin. Cysteines in the central cavity of the tetramer bind to NO in the lungs and releases it into the vascular space, to counter the natural NO-scavenging effect of hemoglobin. In the future, this mechaninsm may be exploited to eliminate the vasoconstrictive effect of cell-free hemoglobin

Oxygen delivery and autoxidation of hemoglobin

of special interest. Theoretical calculations demonstrate the effects of intermediately oxidized tetramers on the oxygen affinity and cooperativity of hemoglobin. The calculations have implications for the design of blood substitutes that will maintain oxygen-carrying capacity throughout the inevitable process of being oxidized within the blood stream.

Superoxide dismutase and catalase cross-linked to polyhemoglobin reduces methemoglobin formation in vitro
-
of outstanding interest. Glutaraldehyde polymerization results in significant levels of oxidized hemoglobin; however, the addition of catalase and superoxide dismutase to the polymerization reaction reduces the oxidation of hemoglobin. In addition, the oxidation rate of the resulting polymers is less than the polymers not cross-linked to catalase and superoxide dismutase. This chemical modification described is the first to address the problems associated with increased autoxidation rates in vivo.
