    • of special interest. This paper marks the beginning of the molecular identification of vertebrate trp homolog genes. Screening of Expressed Sequence Tag data provided by the human genome project revealed a partial sequence with a high degree of homology to Drosophila trp. This sequence was used to identify the full-length open reading frame of a TRP homolog in a human fetal brain library. Likewise, the C. elegans genome project provided a trp homolog in this organism. Analysis of the TRP sequences from different organisms reveals a common domain organization that is highly conserved throughout evolution.

    • The Drosophila light-activated conductance is composed of the two channels TRP and TRPL
    • of special interest. This paper addresses the issue concerning the function of the two putative channel subunits, TRP and TRPL, that have been identified at the molecular level in Drosophila photoreceptors. To facilitate rigorous analysis of this issue, a powerful screening strategy based on the loss of the TRPL antigene on immunoblots of mutagenized homozygous second chromosome flies was used. This selection scheme yielded a novel trpl mutant fly. The somewhat surprising result of this study was that the phenotype of the trpl mutant was revealed only on a trp mutant background. Strikingly, the double mutant trpl:trp almost completely abolished the photoreceptor potential. The authors used both immunolocalization and functional analyses to draw comprehensive conclusions on the relative contributions of TRP and TRPL to the light response and possible molecular mechanisms of activation of the light-dependent channels.
