1. Most direct measurements concern the drag on a solid body or the torque or a rotating disk. It is however obvious to compute the corresponding power. Drag and torque measurements are widely discussed in Schlichting's book [3]. Recent measurements of torque have been performed in the Couette-Taylor flow, Lathrop D. P., Fineberg J. and Swinney H. L., Phys. Rev. A 46 (1992) 6390.
2. A similar problem in Rayleigh-Bénard convection concerns the dependence of the convective heat flux versus the Rayleigh number; for a recent review, see Siggia E., Ann. Rev. Fluid Mech. 26 (1994) 137-168. In all the above studies, the problem of the temporal fluctuations of these global quantites have not been considered.

The experimental set-up is surrounded by movable walls and the measurements are performed with the room closed and vacant in order to eliminate the effect of possible ambient laboratory air motion. The results do not depend on the position of the walls when they are placed far enough from the disks (more than one meter).
