    • Regulation of hlppocampal transmitter release during development and long term potentiation
    • Using dual recordings, the authors show that CA3 pyramidal cells excita CA1 pyramidal cells via a single release site as for excitation of CA3 inhibitory cells 5}}. These results imply that quantal parameters can be measured directly. The authors found that the quantal amplitude is -4 pA, with a variability of 30%, and that the release probability is high (0.9) in one-weekold rats, but declines to 0.5 in two- to three-week-old rats. Both paired pulse facilitation and LTP seem to result exclusively from changes in the release probability.

    • Variation in GABA mini amplitude is the consequence of variation in transmitter concentration
    • Frerking M, Borges B, Wilson M Variation in GABA mini amplitude is the consequence of variation in transmitter concentration. Neuron 1995, 15:885-895. A clever study comparing the effects of a single quantum of transmitter on pre- and postsynaptic GABA receptors at the same synapse. The authors found that pre- and postsynaptic responses are strongly correlated. By convincingly discounting other possibilities, they suggest that IPSC variability derives from variations in vesicle size and, consequently, in the amount of transmitter released. A Gaussian distribution of vesicle diameter must be cubed for volume and squared again for the two GABA molecules needed for channel opening. A sixth power Gaussian distribution fitted IPSC distributions reasonably well.
