7 × 7 = - 1.2 eV. For the Na-and K-induced (3×1) structures, we find ΔΦ = - 1.0 and - 1.4 eV, respectively (Ref. [12]). Upon completion of the first layer, ΔΠ = -2.5, -2.4 and -2.9 eV for Ba, Na and K, respectively. Considering the fact that the workfunction is very sensitive to the absolute coverage at low coverage, it is indeed very likely that the absolute coverages of the Ba-, Na-and K-induced (3 × 1) reconstructions are very close, i.e. ∼ 1/3 ML.

We considered alternative explanations for the 85 eV peak. For instance, it could be a plasmon-loss satellite of the 92 eV signal because the plasmon energy of Ba is close to 7 eV. However, our electron energy loss data did not reveal 7 eV plasmon losses.
