Am J Respir Crit Care Med 1995, 152:137-141. An examination of increased risk of NP in patients requiring re-intubation. NP was more common among patients requiring re-intubation than among controls. Ann Intern Med 1995, 123:168-174. A randomized, controlled comparison of a 7-day circuit change versus no circuit change performed in a large number of patients. Findings are well supported and show little difference in the incidence of hospital mortality. The authors suggest elimination of routine circuit changes as a cost-saving measure.

Continuous aspiration of subglottic secretions in preventing ventilator associated pneumonia
-
Valles J, Artigas A, Rello J, Bonsoms N, Fontanals D, Blanch L, Fernandez R, Baigorri F, Mestre J: Continuous aspiration of subglottic secretions in preventing ventilator associated pneumonia. Ann Intern Med 1995, 122:179-186. Continuous aspiration of subglottic secretions reduced the rate of VAP compared with that in controls, but this reduction was associated primarily with a reduction in the incidence of early VAP and a reduction in VAP due to H. influenzae and gram-positive coccal infections, but not VAP due to P. aeruginosa and Enterobacter spp.
