The fiber optic probe was a bifurcated bundle with the incident radiation from a 200 μm central fiber collected by six surrounding fibers. A holographic notch filter was used for laser line rejection. To collect spectra the probe was positioned at approximately 35° to normal, 2 mm from the surface with a stream of argon flowing over the surface.
