    • A rigorous calculation would show that the critical value of x for the isotropic - nematic transition is somewhat smaller than 5 (cf. ref 1). Equation 8 as well as all other equations in this paper are valid only for weak orientations. They cannot be used when either or both components are in a highly oriented state, e.g., a nematic liquid crystalline state.
