    • The gold substrate did not grow with a (111) epitaxy but was polycrystalline when the thickness of the intermediate titanium layer increased beyond 1.0 nm. The presence of this Ti layer was necessary, however, to ensure good adhesion between gold and mica. Gold on mica without a titanium interlayer pealed off the mica with exposure to buffer during the many handling steps.

    • In another, shorter, variation of the rinsing procedure, samples were washed with PBS (3 × 1 mL), incubated in BSA 1% in PBS for 90 min, and rinsed with 0.1% Tween 20 in PBS. Quantitation of the radioactivity suggested saturation in the coverage of UV+ samples and a coverage of 25% of UV-samples.
