    • xTe (mercury cadmium telluride; MCT) crystallizes in the zinc blende structure. Its electric properties vary from semimetallic (x = 0) to semiconducting (x ≳ 0.1) at room temperature, depending on its composition. These properties are further modified by foreign impurities and by native defects. Hg-rich alloys are widely used to make detectors for the middle and infrared spectral regions; the devices are, most commonly, arrays of simple photoconductors or photodiodes.

    • All experiments reported here were done inside a Philips 515 SEM or inside a controlled atmosphere micromanipulator (MMR Industries), allowing sample heating and cooling and continuous monitoring of the temperature.
