Hermine Hug-Hellmuth was in fact the first analyst to treat children extensively; she published a summary of her work in 1921. Unfortunately her career was cut short when she was murdered in 1924 by her orphaned nephew. See George Maclean & Ulrich Rappen, Hermine Hug-Hellmuth: Her Life and Work (NY: Routledge, 1991).

Some readers may object to the characterization of psychoanalytic therapeutic technique as a scientific practice. I cannot digress into a lengthy philosophical discussion of the nature of science, at this point. Let us simply adopt a broad definition of science as a discipline of enquiry into the nature of things, involving systematic observation of the way things are and theory to explain those observations. As Freud saw it, psychoanalysis was a human science, with psychoanalytic technique serving as both a form of therapy and a mode of enquiry into human nature. By this definition of science, I would agree with him.

Grosskurth's biography is the only source for this characterization of Klein's troubled relationship with her mother, but the account is based on reliable primary sources: Klein's letters from her mother and Klein's incomplete autobiography.

The Psychological Principles of Early Analysis
-
Melanie Klein, "The Psychological Principles of Early Analysis," in Writings, Vol. 1. The fact that the mother is also phantasied as a "mother-with-penis," or combined parent figure, complicates this picture of the super-ego. Klein did not envisage a super-ego based solely on introjection of the mother but saw it as consisting of imagos of various kinds based on both parents.

note
-
I refer to the child as "he" simply to avoid the confusion of pronouns that would arise if both Klein and the child patient were "she." At this stage in Klein's work the sex of the child is unimportant to her theorizing; Klein did not address the issue of sex differences in the Oedipus complex until later.
