Kraepelin was referring here to Ewald Hecker (1843-1909), a collaborator of Kahlbaum whose paper on hebephrenia (a putative variety of early onset of schizophrenia) was to become one of the classical publications of the late nineteeth century ('Die Hebephrenie', Virchows Archiv, lii (1871), 394-429). Hecker was a distinguished non-academic psychiatrist who in 1907 was given the title of 'professor' by the Prussian government.

23. A medical neologism that failed to become established in standard dictionaries. It was probably derived from the Greek ε + (Combining comma above)ργατεία - labour, work, handicraft, and was used to refer to that mental function which pertained to action.
