Standards for the diagnosis and care of patients with chronic obstructive lung disease: Inpatient management of COPD
-
Ad Hoc Committee of the Scientific Assembly on Clinical Problems: Standards for the diagnosis and care of patients with chronic obstructive lung disease: inpatient management of COPD. Am J Resp Crit Care Med 1995, 152(suppl 2):S97-S106. This article is but one of several articles regarding COPD representing the official view of the official American Thoracic Society. It was prepared by a group of experts in pulmonary disease. It should be required reading for any physician caring for patients with COPD.

Randomized, prospective trial of noninvasive positive pressure ventilation in acute respiratory failure
-
Kramer N, Meyer TJ, Meharg J, Cece RD, Hill NS: Randomized, prospective trial of noninvasive positive pressure ventilation in acute respiratory failure. Am J Respir Crit Care Med 1995, 151:1799-1806. Although a small study population, this represents one of the first confirmatory studies regarding noninvasive ventilation in COPD after the initial study of Brochard et al. (N Engl J Med 1992, 323:1523-1530). As such, it is an excellent methodologic study, ie, randomized, prospective study. The results indicate that intubation and mechanical ventilation are reduced with noninvasive ventilation.

Noninvasive ventilation for acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
-
Brochard L, Mancebo J, Wysocki M, Iofaso F, Conti G, Rauss A, Simonneau G, Benito S, Gasparetto A, Lemaire F, et al.: Noninvasive ventilation for acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. N Engl J Med 1995, 333:817-822. The most recent of the studies evaluating noninvasive ventilation in COPD exacerbations.
