2 laser radar system, and a global WINDSAT. He is currently President of Coherent Technologies, Inc., where he is also a physicist. He received five patents for coherent laser radar systems design and application. Mr. Huffaker served as chairman of the 1st and 2nd OSA Topical Meetings on Coherent Laser Radar for Atmospheric Sensing. R. Michael Hardesty (Member, IEEE) received the B.S. degree in 1971 from Viginia Polytechnic and State University, Blacksburg, VA, the M.S. degree in 1972 from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and the Ph.D. degree in 1984 from the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA, all in electrical engineering. He began his career as a Technical Staff member at Bell Telephone Laboratories and GTE Information Systems. In 1975 he joined the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administation (NOAA). He is currently Chief of the Atmospheric Lidar Division of the Environmental Technology Laboratory at NOAA, and he also serves as Head of a joint Optical Remote Sensing Group co-sponsored by NOAA and the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, CO. His current research interests are centered on development and application of optical techniques for remote measurement of atmospheric winds, water vapor, and aerosol properties. He is an Associate Editor of the AMS Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology and Applied Optics. Dr. Hardesty is a fellow of the Optical Society of America, and a member of AMS and the American Geophysical Union. He is an elected member of the Administrative Committee of the IEEE Geoscience and remote Sensing Society.
