    • On ultrafast time scales, the IR response of Si to a visible pump pulse is more complex than shown in Figure 1, often showing a fast decrease in absorption prior to the large increase. However, the fast portion of the response occurs on a timescale of about 1 ps and would not appreciably affect the 8 ps rise seen in Figure 1, which is almost entirely due the pulse cross-correlation width.
