Albumin mRNA was not amplified from the blood of patients with cirrhosis, with tumors metastatic to the liver, or from healthy control subjects.

The authors confirm the detection of albumin mRNA in the peripheral blood of healthy individuals using a double round of PCR. This phenomenon probably results from low-level transcription of the α-fetoprotein gene in circulating leukocytes (illegitimate transcription).

J Virol 1995, 69:1851-1859. Using protein affinity chromatography and gel mobility shift analysis, the authors confirmed that HBx protein binds directly to wild-type p53 protein. They also showed, in in vivo transfection experiments, that HBx protein binds to and represses transactivation by p53 protein, an activity similar to that of the cellular oncoprotein MDM2.

The authors detected HCV RNA in tumor and liver tissue from three patients with HCV-related HCC in whom the nontumorous liver tissue showed only mild portal fibrosis or portal inflammation, or both (Knodell activity score 1 to 2). Their observation provides indirect evidence that HCV may be directly oncogenic.
