    • Bond distances, infrared spectra and other results provide strong evidence for some extent of covalent bond character for certain hydrogen bonds in nonaqueous environments.10,19 However, the near additivity of the energy of hydrogen bonds observed in this study suggests that the electronic rearrangement that occurs upon formation of these hydrogen bonds is small. Additivity is expected for electrostatic interactions if each of these interactions produces little change in charge distribution. In contrast, an additive effect would not be expected for interactions that are predominantly covalent in character, as there is generally extensive electronic rearrangements upon formation of a covalent bond. This would weaken the ability of the group undergoing such a rearrangement to form a second covalent or noncovalent bond. Thus, these hydrogen bonds appear to be predominantly electrostatic in character.
