Cloning and expression of a gene encoding an integrin-like protein in Candida albicans
-
Gale C, Finkel D, Tao N, Meinke M, McCllelan M, Olson J, Kendrick K, Hostetter MK: Cloning and expression of a gene encoding an integrin-like protein in Candida albicans. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 1996, 96:357-361. This study reports the cloning of αINT1, a gene unique to C. albicans that encodes a surface protein on blastospores, which in turn is recognized by monoclonal antibodies against the leukocyte integrins αM (CD11 b) and αX(CD11c). Transformation of S. cerevisiae with a galactose-inducible plasmid leads to the expression of αINT1 and to the formation of germ tubes. S. cerevisiae transformants expressing αINT1 bind monoclonal antibodies against the leukocyte integrins and anti-peptide antibodies recognizing the candidal gene product.
