The su(Hw) protein bound to gypsy sequences in one chromosome can repress enhancer-promoter interactions in the paired gene located in the other homolog

Georgiev PG, Corces VG: The su(Hw) protein bound to gypsy sequences in one chromosome can repress enhancer-promoter interactions in the paired gene located in the other homolog. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 1995, 92:5184-5188. This paper shows that, in the absence of the mod(mdg4) protein, the gypsy insulator can act interchromosomally and repress enhancer function in trans. This is an interesting finding which suggests that the alteration in chromatin structure caused by su(Hw) in one chromosome can be transmitted to the paired homolog.

A Drosophila insulator protein facilitates dosage compensation of the X chromosome mini-white gene located at autosomal insertion sites
-
Roseman RR, Swan JM, Geyer PK: A Drosophila insulator protein facilitates dosage compensation of the X chromosome mini-white gene located at autosomal insertion sites. Development 1995, 121:3573-3582. This paper shows that an insulator can affect the levels of dosage compensation of a transgene inserted in an autosomal location. As dosage compensation is regulated by modulation of chromatin, the results suggest a role of the insulator in this process.

Effects of the Drosophila su(Hw) insulator protein on the expression of the divergently transcribed yolk protein genes

••] demonstrate that an enhancer insulated by a boundary element is still able to activate transcription from a non-insulated promoter. This is an important finding, which indicates that inhibition of enhancer function by an insulator does not affect the interaction of transcription factors with enhancer sequences, and an insulated enhancer is otherwise functional.
