note
-
Although only recently appreciated, both West African and South African slaves descended from the people of Cameroon in West Africa (42). According to linguistic analysis, the speakers of proto-Bantu originated in the region between the Cross River (which flows into the Bight of Biafra near the Nigerian city of Calabar) and the country east of Mount Cameroon (ref. 42, p. 65). From these earliest Bantu-speaking people are descended the modern-day tribes of West Africa, and the populous Xhosa tribe now located in the Eastern State of South Africa (42).
