The formal oxidation state (Ta(III) vs Ta(V)) is unclear because the bridging propyne ligand is neither linear (an argument for a Ta(III) center) nor bent to the extent of a normal alkene (the Ta-C-C angle in 20 is 151.9(8)°) which would lead to a cyclopropene-like Ta(V) structure. We believe that there is at least a significant contribution from the Ta(III) resonance form.
