This is an important study which not only partly characterized a proximal tubular endonuclease triggered by hypoxia/reperfusion, but also emphasized that elements of the pathway of programmed cell death can be dissociated from the classical morphological changes which define apoptosis (see also [47]).

Apoptosis in glomerular sclerosis
-
Sugiyama H, Kashihara N, Makino H, Yamasaki Y, Ota Z: Apoptosis in glomerular sclerosis. Kidney Int 1996, 49:103-111. Important new data are described in detail in this review, which suggest that apoptosis might be the mechanism by which glomerular cells are lost during scarring. A convincing demonstration is given of increased glomerular cell apoptosis in IgA nephropathy and lupus nephritis, which correlated with 'sclerosis score'. Support is provided by studies of remnant kidneys in rats, which showed increased glomerular and tubular cell apoptosis in kidneys undergoing glomerular and interstitial scarring.
