Lidar sensing of plume dispersion: Analysis methods and product quality for light-scattering tracer particles
-
Multiple scattering effects can probably be incorporated into our formalism using the phenomenoiogical approach developed for studies of laser imaging of particulate plumes in the atmosphere. See, for example, W. L. Eberhard, G. T. McNice, and S. W. Traxel, "Lidar sensing of plume dispersion: Analysis methods and product quality for light-scattering tracer particles," J. Atmos. Oceanic Technol. 4, 674-689 (1987).

edited by V. K. Varadan and V. V. Varadan Elsevier Science, Amsterdam, Chap. 1
-
A reviewer has pointed out that much of the material in the first part of Sect. II and in Appendix A is, indeed, available; see, for example, R. E. Kleinman and T. B. A. Senior, in Low and High Frequency Asymptotics, edited by V. K. Varadan and V. V. Varadan (Elsevier Science, Amsterdam, 1986), Chap. 1. The justification for including this material reduces to the desirability of making the paper self-contained and of exposing the readership to the type of mathematics used, as well as the importance of establishing notation.

There are situations where this assumption is not valid. For example, the age of the particle cloud may be such that the heavier particles have had an opportunity to settle to a greater extent than the lighter ones.

note

This result does not have any bearing on the utility of multifrequency acoustic systems for estimating size distributions and concentrations. In the Rayleigh region, where the frequency dependence of the backscattered intensity consists solely of a multiplicative factor of the frequency to the fourth power, the most that a multifrequency system can provide beyond a single-frequency one is confirmation that scattering is indeed in the Rayleigh region, a check of the calibration and a reduction in ambient noise with appropriate processing.
