Use of blood products for elective surgery in 43 European hospitals
-
The SANGUIS Study Group: Use of blood products for elective surgery in 43 European hospitals. Transf Med 1994, 4:251-268. A very important paper, because it illustrates the tremendous differences in transfusion practice and volume replacement documented for routine elective surgery therapy performed in 43 European teaching hospitals. Specific interest is focused on the efforts made in the different hospitals to avoid homologous transfusion.

RBC transfusion in the ICU - Is there a reason?
-
Corwin HL, Parsonnet KC, Gettinger A: RBC transfusion in the ICU - is there a reason? Chest 1995, 108:767-771. This study has shown that most of the RBC transfusions in critically ill patients are given with the aim to keep the haemoglobin concentration in a preset range rather than to meet actual physiological needs of the patients. Furthermore, daily phlebotomy (blood sampling for laboratory tests) significantly contributed to the fall in haemoglobin concentration observed in this study.

Transfusion requirements incritical care - A pilot study
-
Hébert PC, Wells G, Marshall J, Martin C, Tweeddale M, Pagliarello G, Blajchman M, for the Canadian Critical Care Trials Group: Transfusion requirements incritical care - a pilot study. JAMA 1995, 273:1439-1444. This very important clinical study shows that a lower transfusion trigger (haemoglobin concentration of 7.0-9.0g/dl) results in a reduction on the number of RBC units given per patient without any apparent negative effects on patient outcome.
