Women aged 18 and above who were admitted to deliver at the New Nyanza Provincial Hospital, Kisumu, Kenya, were asked to participate in the study. All volunteers signed an informed consent form translated into their native language after receiving a study explanation form and an oral explanation from a nurse in their native language.

Uninfected placenta tissue was incubated with 0.1 U of chondroitinase AC for 30 min at 37°C, after which the tissue was rinsed several times with phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), and a binding assay was performed as described in Fig. 2, A and B.
