1. Fordyce WE: Back Pain in the Workplace: Management of Disability in Nonspecific Conditions. Seattle: IASP Press; 1995. This book contains the recommendations of the Task Force on Pain in the Workplace of the International Association for the Study of Pain. Its main emphasis is the reconceptualization of chronic back pain in a biopsychosocial model. The authors propose moving the management of chronic back pain from a medical-disability focus to a rehabilitative one. This publication provides an excellent synopsis of this significant public health problem and a rational approach to its management.

3. Wolfe F, Ross K, Anderson J, Russell U, Hebert L: The prevalence and characteristics of fibromyalgia inn the general population. Arthritis Rheum 1995, 38:19-28. These authors conducted a careful epidemiologic investigation to determine the prevalence of fibromyalgia in a metropolitan community. They improved on previous clinic-based studies by randomly selecting subjects from the general adult population and by using current American College of Rheumatology criteria. They found the prevalence to be 2% for both sexes, 3.4% for women, and 0.5% for men. Their results indicated that the rates of fibromyalgia in the community were similar to those of previous clinic-based reports.
4. Buchwald D, Garrity D: Comparison of patients with chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and multiple chemical sensitivities. Arch Intern Med 1994,154:2049-2053. This study is a well-designed attempt to empirically demonstrate the similarity of physical and psychological complaints in patients with fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and multiple chemical sensitivities. The authors found significant overlap in the physical symptoms and psychological distress associated with these three disorders.

7. Martinez JE, Ferraz MB, Sato El, Atra E: Fibromyalgia versus rheumatoid arthritis: a longitudinal comparison of the quality of life. J Rheumatol 1995, 22:270-274. This study quantifies the impact of chronic pain conditions on quality of life. Results indicate that patients with fibromyalgia experience a level of emotional and economic distress similar to that of patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

9. Fricton JR: Myofascial pain. Baillieres Clin Rheumatol 1994, 8:857-879. This paper provides a thorough review of myofascial pain syndromes. It highlights physical and psychological factors and outlines a rehabilitative approach to management.

This paper reports a prospective study of the impact of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-IIIR diagnoses on long-term functioning after an intensive rehabilitation program. Neither type nor degree of psychopathology was predictive of ability to return to work.

The alteration of faulty pain beliefs is a frequent goal of chronic pain rehabilitation. This study showed the relationship between these faulty beliefs and level of disability in a chronic pain population. This lends further support to the cognitive-behavioral approaches that alter pain beliefs and attitudes.

Patients with low back pain that was not consistent with physical findings displayed greater rates of compensation seeking, higher levels of opiate use, and more catastrophizing cognitions.
