JAMA 1994, 272:1661-1665. Individuals 60 years of age and older were randomly assigned to receive inactivated influenza vaccine or placebo. Laboratory-confirmed influenza illnesses were reduced by 50% in the vaccinated, even though the circulating strain had drifted from that in the vaccine.
