In a large series (164 patients), VEGF levels were found to be elevated in the aqueous and vitreous humor of patients with active proliferative retinopathy secondary to diabetes, prematurity, or occlusion of the central retinal vein. However, VEGF was not detectable prior to active proliferative retinopathy or in proliferative retinopathy in a quiescent phase.
