Isolation of the tomato Cf-9 gene for resistance to Cladosporium fulvum by transposon tagging

Jones DA, Thomas CM, Hammond-Kosack KE, Balint-Kurti PJ, Jones JDG: Isolation of the tomato Cf-9 gene for resistance to Cladosporium fulvum by transposon tagging. Science 1994, 266:789-793. The tomato Cf-9 gene, which carries an extensive run of putatively extracellular LRRs and a short cytoplasmic tail, is described. This gene confers resistance to C. fulvum races that carry the avr9 gene, which encodes a secreted 28 amino acid cysteine-rich peptide.

Structure of the Arabidopsis RPM1 gene enabling dual specificity disease resistance

Grant MR, Godiard L, Straube E, Ashfield T, Lewald J, Sattler A, Innes RW, Dangl JL: Structure of the Arabidopsis RPM1 gene enabling dual specificity disease resistance. Science 1995, 269:843-846. The Arabidopsis RPM1 gene confers resistance both to P. syringae strains that carry avrRpm1 and to strains that carry the non-homologous avrB avirulence genes. RPM1 has a broadly similar structure to RPS2. Many land-races that lack RPM1 function have a deletion in the RPM1 region.

The L6 gene for flax rust resistance is related to the Arabidopsis bacterial resistance gene RPS2 and the tobacco viral resistance gene N
-
Lawrence GJ, Finnegan EJ, Ayliffe MA, Ellis JG: The L6 gene for flax rust resistance is related to the Arabidopsis bacterial resistance gene RPS2 and the tobacco viral resistance gene N. Plant Cell 1995, 7:1195-1206. These authors describe the transposon tagging of the L6 gene of flax that confers resistance to flax rust. The flax system was originally used by Flor [1,2] to establish the existence of gene-for-gene interactions between plants and pathogens. As for N, L6 shows homology to the cytoplasmic domains of Toll and IL-1 receptor.

Science 1995, 270:1804-1806. The rice Xa21 gene, which confers resistance to bacterial blight of rice, carries 23 extracellular LRRs and an intracellular serine/threonine protein kinase domain. The tomato Cf-2 disease resistance locus comprises two functional genes encoding leucine rich repeat proteins
-
Dixon MS, Jones DA, Keddie JS, Thomas CM, Harrison K, Jones JDG: The tomato Cf-2 disease resistance locus comprises two functional genes encoding leucine rich repeat proteins. Cell 1996, 84:451-459. The isolation of the tomato Cf-2 gene permitted these authors to compare Cf-2 and Cf-9. This revealed a conserved domain that they hypothesize may be involved in signal transduction through interaction with another protein that carries an extensive extracytoplasmic domain.

12-specified race-specific resistance to powdery mildew in barley. Plant Cell 1994, 6:983-994. These authors characterize in detail the mutations identified in [43]. The consequences of mutations at Nar-1 and Nar-2 (required for Mla-specified resistance in barley to powdery mildew) are characterized at the phenotypic level and the two genes are mapped.

Identification of two genes required in tomato for full Cf-9-dependent resistance to Cladosporium fulvum
-
2 progeny scored for reduced resistance to C. fulvum. Eight mutations are obtained, six of which map to Cf-9 and two of which map to loci that are unlinked both to Cf-9 and each other.

NDR1, a locus of Arabidopsis thaliana that is required for disease resistance to both a bacterial and a fungal pathogen
-
Century K, Holub EB, Staskawicz BJ: NDR1, a locus of Arabidopsis thaliana that is required for disease resistance to both a bacterial and a fungal pathogen. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 1995, 92:6597-6601. An Arabidopsis gene designated NDR1 (non-specific disease resistance) is identified by mutagenesis and shown to be required for the function both of RPS2 and of genes that confer resistance to Peronospora parasitica.
