EMBO J 1995, 14:1532-1541. This paper describes the RING finger domain from the acute promyelocytic leukaemia protein PML. The structure is different to the IEEHV RING but has some conserved similarities, especially the use of the cross-brace ligation scheme. A comparison of these structures demonstrates the diverse nature of this family. This paper also indicates that the RING domain is necessary for PML-associated nuclear body formation.

J Virol 1995, 69:7339-7344. This paper uses the solution structure of the IEEHV RING finger to test point mutations of the amphipathic a helix of a related herpes virus (IE110) RING finger. The authors show that this region of the IE110 RING domain is important for virus growth and the normal interaction of IE110 with PML nuclear structures. It is interesting to note that this region appears to be absent in the PML RING domain.
