O'Brien B, Goeree R, Hafeez M, Hunt R: Cost-effectiveness of Helicobacter pylori eradication for the long-term management of duodenal ulcer in Canada. Arch Intern Med 1995, 155:1958-1963. The analysts provides economic evidence in support of the recent guidance that for persons with duodenal ulcer, early attempts to eradicate H. pylori are recommended.

The cost-effectiveness of Helicobacter pylori eradication versus maintenance and episodic treatment in duodenal ulcer patients in Sweden
-
Unge P, Jönsson B, Stålhammar N-O: The cost-effectiveness of Helicobacter pylori eradication versus maintenance and episodic treatment in duodenal ulcer patients In Sweden. Pharmacoeconomics 1995, 8:410-427. Using a Markov chain approach, Swedish cost data and a study period of 5 years, we concluded that H. Pylori eradication with omeprazole and appropriate antibiotics is a cost-effective alternative compared with both maintenance and episodic treatment.

Cost-effectiveness of Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy in duodenal ulcer disease
-
Jönsson B: Cost-effectiveness of Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy in duodenal ulcer disease. Scand J Gastroenterol 1996, 31(suppl 215):90-95. A model analysis comparing H. pylori eradication with conventional treatment, in patients with duodenal ulcer disease, clearly shows that H. pylori eradication is a more cost-effective therapy and that treatment regimes that give higher eradication rates are cost-effective.

Initial endoscopy or empirical therapy with or without testing for Helicobacter pylori for dyspepsia: A decision analysis
-
Silverstein MD, Petterson T, Nicholas JT: Initial endoscopy or empirical therapy with or without testing for Helicobacter pylori for dyspepsia: a decision analysis. Gastroenterology 1996, 110:72-83. This study compares the direct medical charges in the first year after onset of dyspepsia for patients managed by initial endoscopy or empirical therapy. The conclusion is that costs and life expectancy are the same for both strategies.
