Trotz spontaner Zytokinproduktion in Vollblut septischer Patienten und systemisch nachweisbarer Zytokinspiegel könnte daher eine inadäquate Stimulierbarkeit von Monozyten/Makrophagen zur Immundefizienz kritisch Kranker beitragen.

Zur spezifischen Kontraktilitätszunahme trägt vermutlich eine gesteigerte Endothelinrezeptorgenexpression bei [3]. Eine simultane Induktion endogener Dilatatoren und Konstriktoren könnte mithin für die Zunahme der Perfusionsheterogenität [15] in der Sepsis eine wichtige Rolle spielen.

Mittels direkter intravitalmikroskopischer Darstellung lassen sich in vivo zwei Interaktionsphänomene von Leukozyten mit Endothelzellen unterscheiden, ein reversibles selektin (LECAM-1)-vermitteltes "Rollen" ("slow rolling") des Leukozyten auf dem Endothelverband, gefolgt von der integrinvermittelten festen Adhärenz.
