A hospital-based twin register of the heritability of DSM-IV unipolar depression
-
McGuffin P, Katz R, Watkins S, Rutherford J: A hospital-based twin •• register of the heritability of DSM-IV unipolar depression. Arch Gen Psychiatry 1996, 53:129-136. This reanalysis of a previous twin study shows a markedly increased heritability for major depressive disorder in adults following increased rigor in the diagnostic process.

The structure of the genetic and environmental risk factors for six major psychiatric disorders in women. Phobia, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, bulimia, major depression and alcoholism
-
Kendler KS, Walters EE, Neale MC, Kessler RC, Heath AC, Eaves LJ: The •• structure of the genetic and environmental risk factors for six major psychiatric disorders in women. Phobia, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, bulimia, major depression and alcoholism. Arch Gen Psychiatry 1995, 52:374-383. The paper describes the results of a multivariate twin analysis of six disorders in women. Evidence is presented for two common genetic components. One is shared by depression and generalized anxiety disorders. The other is shared by phobia, panic disorder and bulimia. Alcoholism is genetically distinct from the other disorders.

Are anxiety symptoms in childhood heritable?
-
Thapar A, McGuffin P: Are anxiety symptoms in childhood heritable? •• J Child Psychol Psychiat 1995, 36:439-447. This paper presents heritability estimates for anxiety symptoms in a large population-based twin sample of children and adolescents. Parent-reported twin anxiety was highly hentable. In contrast, self-reported anxiety in adolescent twins was primarily environmental in origin.

Offspring at high and low risk for depression and anxiety: Mechanisms of psychiatric disorder
-
Warner V, Mufson L, Weissman MM: Offspring at high and low risk for • depression and anxiety: mechanisms of psychiatric disorder. J Am Acad Child Adolesc Psychiatry 1995, 34:786-797. The prevalence of affective and anxiety disorders in the offspring of parents who have panic disorder, major depression, both, or neither was determined. When controlling for coparent diagnosis and psychosocial functioning, youth depression and anxiety disorders were predicted by parent major depression (recurrent) but not by parent anxiety disorder.

Psychiatric diagnoses in the child and adolescent members of extended families identified through adult bipolar affective disorder probands
-
Todd RD, Reich W, Petti T, Joshi P, DePauto R, Nurnberger J Jr, Reich T: •• Psychiatric diagnoses in the child and adolescent members of extended families identified through adult bipolar affective disorder probands. J Am Child Adolesc Psychiatry 1996, 35:664-671. The lifetime prevalence of psychiatric disorders in youth was determined for a series of extended pedigrees identified through bipolar affective disorder probands. The prevalence of youth major depression and mania was correlated with genetic relationship to affected adults. The prevalence of youth anxiety disorders was not correlated with adult illness.
